The vast majority of us cannot fathom the incredible variety of animal species that now inhabit the Earth. Some of us are even taken aback when we learn about amazing animals we were previously unaware of. But, in all seriousness, how can you expect to know each of the 1,367,555 animal species on Earth that are not insects at this point in time? Only 1% of all animal species that have ever lived are represented here! Not to mention the depths of our seas, which are likely home to even stranger-looking animals waiting to be discovered.

Scientists themselves continue to study new species each year. They freely admit that present scientific knowledge is lacking about the great majority of strange organisms now in existence. Because of this, the results reported in this article range from the exceptional to the downright weird. Reddit provided the impetus for us to put up a list of species and creatures that have never been described before, such as the Dumbo Octopus, Pink Fairy Armadillo, Star-Nosed Mole, and Aye-Aye.

The third one, the Aye-Aye, warrants its own paragraph not just because it is an unusual species but also because of the percussion-based hunting method. This indicates that the Aye-Aye taps on wood to locate grubs by listening for the sound of a hollow tree trunk and then gnaws the wood to make a hole from which he removes and swallows the fare with his extended middle finger. Another well-known animal that searches for food in this way is the woodpecker. To put it another way, the aye-aye is perhaps one of the most fascinating animals that inhabit the globe.

Keep scrolling to familiarize yourself with some of the most peculiar animals on the Earth, but be aware that not all are cute and cuddly in appearance!
