Have you ever heard of the Nicobar pigeon? The multicolored bird is the closest surviving related to the extinct flightless Dodo bird, and it is truly lovely.
Despite being related to the mythical extinct species, the Nicobar pigeon looks nothing like it. Nicobar’s brilliant hues are one of its distinguishing features. It has reddish legs, a white tail, and blue, copper, and green feathers on its body. The gorgeous birds’ colorful traits are due to their habitat – coastal areas from the Nicobar Islands and tiny islands with few natural predators that these unusual birds would need to hide from. The Nicobar pigeon is classified as “near threatened” by the IUCN.
