When it comes to Australia’s wildlife, the Tasmanian devil is one of the most well-known and unique species. Once roaming the mainland, these ferocious creatures have been confined to Tasmania for over 3,000 years due to the increase in their natural enemies, dingoes. But now, thanks to the efforts of the Aussie Ark conservation group, a plan to bring these creatures back to the wild in mainland Australia has been implemented.
In 2020, 26 Tasmanian devils were released into the wild with the help of famous Hollywood star Chris Hemsworth and his wife, Elsa Pataky. The aim was to increase the population of this endangered species and allow them to control the feral cats and foxes that threaten other endangered species on the Australian mainland. The project has succeeded, with the Tasmanian devils breeding and producing seven new joeys.
The president of Aussie Ark, Tim Faulkner, has stated that this project has a lot at stake. If the Tasmanian devils don’t breed, it could be all over for the species. However, the new joeys are promising, and rangers will closely monitor their health in the coming weeks. Hopefully, the number of cubs will rise to 20 by the end of this year and 40 in the next two years.

Unsurprisingly, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) categorizes the Tasmanian devil as endangered. Their population has declined since the 1990s due to facial tumor disease. But now, with the efforts of Aussie Ark and the involvement of celebrities like Hemsworth and Pataky, there is hope for the future of this unique species.

While Tasmanian devils may look cute with their small dog-like appearance, don’t be fooled. These creatures have one of the strongest bites of all animals, thanks to their powerful, muscular jaws. They are also very ferocious, earning them the nickname “devils”. As the most giant carnivorous marsupials in the world, Tasmanian devils play a crucial role as critical predators in their range.
The reintroduction of Tasmanian devils into mainland Australia is essential in preserving biodiversity and protecting endangered species. It’s a reminder that conservation efforts are crucial in maintaining the delicate balance of nature. And while there is still much work to be done, the success of this project gives us hope that we can make a difference in protecting the world’s wildlife.
