It’s no surprise that many cat lovers scratch their heads, unsure why these intriguing creatures behave the way they do. They’ve even started an online community where they can discuss their concerns and amusements. Anita Kelsey, a qualified and vet-recommended cat behaviorist in the United Kingdom and author of Let’s Talk About Cats: Conversations On Feline Behaviour, was contacted. She was gracious enough to explain why cats sometimes do unusual things that humans don’t understand.
First, Kelsey pointed out that it all relies on how you define “abnormal”: “We can’t explain everything about cats,” she explained, “and I still run across the odd cat in my behavior practice who I have no idea why they’re doing anything.”
However, as the What’s Wrong With Your Cat online forum points out, there could be a reason why we observe our beloved pets performing strange things. “Generally, if a cat is acting ‘out of character,’ it means there needs to be a conversation to figure out why,” the feline behavior expert stated.

While your house cat’s antics may appear confusing, Kelsey said evolutionary qualities and instincts usually drive their acts. “Cats are extremely curious creatures,” she explained. A cat does not act mysteriously for the sake of being mysterious; that is human categorization.”
However, the expert did give a few examples of when you should be concerned about your pet’s behavior. “It’s easy to identify troubling changes when a human knows their cat well, including the regular structure of their day and mannerisms,” Kelsey noted.
“Sleeping for longer than usual, hiding from their guardians, lack of interest in play or food, not going outdoors anymore if free-roaming, toileting outside of the litter pan, or hostility that isn’t generally there are examples of this.”

Many people are familiar with cats’ adorable kneading of their paws as they walk up and down, as if “baking cookies.” According to Nikki Johnson, kittens will knead their mothers to increase milk production, an animal behaviorist at RSPCA Victoria.

“We believe adult cats knead because it reminds them of the soothing and comforting habit they had as kittens.” Some cats drool for the same reason. “They’re both kitten-like habits,” she explained.
Discovering cats in the most strange and tiniest places likely makes them feel safe: “When tigers are given access to boxes in zoos, they will demonstrate the same behavior,” the animal behaviorist added.

Meanwhile, just because a cat nudges or headbutts, your leg doesn’t indicate they want to be petted. “We, as humans, view headbutting as a gesture of affection,” said Richard Gowan, a senior veterinarian at The Cat Clinic. “However, the cat may not tolerate you stooping down to touch it.”
“Cats have a small number of scent glands on their bodies. These glands can be found on their feet, faces, and bottoms. “When cats perform things like kneading, scratching, or headbutting, they’re marking you with their glands,” the veterinarian continued.
