Even though dogs and cats both live on land and are easily domesticated, dogs actually have more similarities with marine animals than they do with their furry foes. Seal pups and fluffy dogs are both classified as Caniformes, which means “dog-like,” and belong to the same suborder of Carnivorans, which explains why they both exhibit many of the same traits (unlike cats, which are Feliformes).

These adorable animals are usually referred to as “puppy doppelgangers,” which this genetic connection fully explains. Don’t trust us?
