Jotto, a baby elephant separated from his herd after falling into a well, found solace in an unlikely friend at the David Shelldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT) elephant orphanage in Kenya. Despite the presence of other elephants at the shelter, Jotto formed a special bond with an ostrich named Pea, who had also been rescued and now considers herself part of the elephant family. Let’s explore this heartwarming friendship between Jotto and Pea and how they are being cared for until they are ready to return to the wild.

At the David Shelldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT) elephant orphanage, a baby elephant named Jotto faced a challenging situation in Kenya. When he was only one month old, he fell into a well, becoming separated from his elephant family. The kind people at DSWT rescued him and brought him to the orphanage, where he could heal and eventually return to the wild.

At the orphanage, Jotto found comfort and friendship with an ostrich named Pea. Pea, along with her ostrich brother Pod, had been rescued by the DSWT staff in 2014. While they were trying to save a baby elephant, they discovered Pea and Pod in need of help as well. Although Pod has since returned to the wild and joined other ostriches, Pea chose to stay with the elephants, feeling like she belonged there.

Pea truly believes she is part of the elephant herd, and Jotto is thrilled to have a feathery friend to snuggle with. The DSWT recently shared these beautiful and tender moments between the two orphans at the Nairobi Nursery, where they and many others are cared for and given a chance to heal. When the time is right, they can return to their natural habitat in the wild.
